Surabaya, Jalaludin Rumi. Member of the Nahdlatul Ulama Scholars Association, Abdul Kadir Riyadi greatly appreciated NU for its commitment to deal with extremist and militant groups being capable of threatening the Unitary State of Republic of Indonesia.

"I do appreciate NU for everthing it has so far done especially in countering extremist and hardline groups which have always struggle for an Islamic khilafa in the country," he told Jalaludin Rumi here recently.

At this point, the lecturer at Surabayas State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) expected NU to at least continue deploying two approaches to help counter the hardline groups.

"Firstly, the organization must campaign against the radical ideology in implementing the Islamic teachings, and secondly it must continue fighting against poverty to narrow the widening socio-economic gap either at home and in the world," he said.

He was of the opinion that the campaign for moderation could be conducted through religious thought and propagation, the acceptance of the Indonesian unitary state, Pancasila state ideology and the continued promotion of pluralism among elite groups and at grass-root levels.

Broad knowledge of clerics (kiai) in Indonesia has become one of the fundamental instruments in addition to the politicians access to power and the investors wealth affecting social change in the country. "The capital of culture or knowledge of clerics is not obtained with much material capital. Kiai becoming a cleric is not easy. Day after day they used to study and practice their knowledge," Yudi Latif said.

According to him, the pesantren ulema have great power in society thanks to their wisdom and piety. Therefore, they have a strong social power to control and provide directions to possible changes.

"The capital of power is very effective for monitoring the government in addition to advocating for the rights of citizens," Yudi added.

Therefore, Yudi continued, the clerics of NU in the Indonesianess context were expected to be capable of voicing criticism to maintain the balance of influences brought by politicians, financiers, or the pressure of the majority.

ICIS will hold its conference in Situbondos pesantren

Situbondo, Jalaludin Rumi. The International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) will hold its conference at Pesantren Salafiyah Syafiiyah Sukorejo, Situbondo, East Java, next week. The conference aims to reinforce and introduce the Islamic moderate values.

One of the organizing committees KH Misbahussalam said the conference which will held on 28-30 March will be attended by Muslim scholars (ulema) such as Sheikh Wahbah Az Zuhaili (Syria), Ali Jumah (Egypt), Sheikh Muhammad Yisif (Moroccon Mufti), Shaykh Abdul - Karim Ad Dhibaghi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Lancene Hasani and so on.

"While the uleme from Indonesia itself are, among others, KH Quraysh Shihab, KH Maruf Amin, KH Tholhah Hasan, and leaders of pesantren," he said after attending a preparatory meeting in the pavilion of Pesantren Salafiyah Syafiiyah Sukorejo, Situbondo, on Friday (21/3).

Kiai Misbah added the conference was expected to at least result in favorable decision, especially in giving input and suggestions for the condition of the Middle Eastern countries that are currently trapped into ongoing conflicts.

"This may be a conceptual contribution to help (Middle East) countries recover from their own prolonged conflict which is partly based on religious sentiments," he said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the ICIS KH Hasyim Muzadi said, the Kiai Azaim-led pesantren was chosen to meet the demand of the late KH Fawaid Syamsul Arifin.

He said, the late KHR Ahmad Fawaid Asad ever came to his house, asking in within a century, there would be held an international ulema conference in the pesantren.

"This pesantren is very historic. In this place, the NU Congress in 1984 was held, resulting in moderate Islamic values and the so-called Khitthah NU," he said.

Rembang, Jalaludin Rumi. The supreme leader of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH A Mustafa Bisri, popularly known as Gus Mus, called on NU young cadres to be pioneers in living simply because it is able to overcome some of the problems faced by Indonesia like rampant corruption.

"Ive currently challenged the newly elected (chairman of Ansor Youth Movement) Mr. Nusron in Surabaya to spearhead a simple living movement. At that time, he answered OK. Ansor should be, because if it is not applied, the condition of Indonesia will continue as it is today," he said at the inauguration of GP Ansor of Central Java at Pesantren Raudlatut Thalibin, leteh, Rembang.

Gus Mus asserted that wealthy and powerful lifestyle is an example of the New Order era.

"In the New Order era, the most rich and powerful was Suharto. For 32 years he was in power, he could be an example of being rich for so long," he said.

Then after the Reform era, continued Gus Mus, there have been many new like-Suharto individuals," saying that almost everyone wanted to be rich and powerful like Suharto.

In addition, Gus Mus also called for the importance of NU cadres to play important roles especially in addressing any emerging problem faced by the Indoensian people.

According to Gus Mus, a simple lifestyle is able to answer a number of problems facing the nation, especially corruption in the country.
